 Post-Meeting Excursion
The trip takes participants from East Iceland south of Vatnajökull glacier (largest glacier in Europe) to the Southern lowlands and to Reykjavik. Covers old Tertiary terrain with deeply dissected colorful central volcanoes and magma chambers, to the glacial flood plains and active volcanic belt in the South.
June 8. Hallormsstadur to Djupivogur (South-East). Tertiary landscapes, deep, colorful valleys. Pedon Breiðdalur, and soils of Tertiary East. Volcanic Paleosols. Djupivogur is a small beautiful fishing town. Hotel Framtid.
June 9. Djupivogur—Hörgsland (South, near Skaftafell National Park). Deep valleys, Rhyolites and interiors of old Tertiary central volcanoes. Vatnajökull glacier, the glacier environment, surging glaciers, glacial rivers and lagoons, and vast desert floodplains. We have rented small “summer houses”, 3-4 participants per house.
June 10. Hörgsland—Höfðabrekka (South, near Vík).
Huge floodplains, catastrophic floods, and active volcanism. The catastrophic 1783 Laki eruption. Katla Central Volcanoe (one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes on Earth), Pedon in the 1918 floodplain.
June 11. Höfðabrekka—Reykjavik.
Number of participants is limited to about 40 people.
