The Meeting – general information

The meeting will take place in Northern and Eastern Iceland. It will commence in the town of Akureyri in North Iceland where we will have one full day of presentations followed by a study of a nearby Histic Andosol profile. On the following day we will traverse the NA highland rift zone, looking at volcanoes, lava fields, highland deserts and other evidence of the rift, along with examining soil profiles along the way. The last part of the meeting takes place in Hallormsstaður near Egilsstadir in the East, where we will have the second half of the presentations and a poster session.

There will be a 250€ registration fee to cover meeting costs in Iceland.

Logistics

1) We have taken care of all transportation within Iceland – you do NOT have to purchase a ticket all the way to Akureyri, but ONLY to the international Keflavik airport. Everyone will be picked-up at the airport* on the 4th of June and transported to Akureyri. Hence it would be very convenient if most people could arrive on the afternoon flights on the 4th of June (* Please let us know if you plan on arriving in Iceland prior to the 4th of June - margretj@rala.is). You can of course travel on your own to Akureyri, but let us know!

2) There are several different accommodation options ranging from a single room with private facilities to a shared room without private facilities. Single rooms are limited in number so we prefer if you share room with someone else. Note! You select your accommodation option at the time of registration.

3) There is an optional post-meeting excursion. The selecting of this option is also made at the time of registration. (Note! The excursion is NOT reimbursed by COST)

4) Please send us information on your travel plans once you have them (margretj@rala.is).

Miscellaneous

· Although we hope that the weather will be good we need to bear in mind that Iceland is situated in the middle of the North Atlantic and very strong low-pressure systems (the famous “Icelandic Low”) can form any time of the year bringing strong winds and heavy rain – so make sure to bring warm clothes and rain gear along. It can also snow in North Iceland, this time of the year!

· Both Akureyri and Hallormstaður have nice hydro-thermal swimming pools so you might want to bring your swimsuit along.

· Finally, for those interested, the Reykjavik / Keflavik airport is unique in that it has a duty-free store for arriving passengers (located right next to the baggage claim area) and prices are more reasonable there than in the rest of the country (expensive to say the least).

· Please, do not hesitate to contact us right away if something is still unclear oa@rala.is (Olafur), hlynur@rala.is (Hlynur), margretj@rala.is (Margret)
